You have to suspend belief a bit...

1. The Vulcans are such pussies they can't stop a mining drill that gets destroyed by a spitball later in the movie.
2. Civilian mining vessels from the near future are more powerful than Klingon and Federation fleets combined.
3. Cadets of Star Fleet Academy who haven't even graduated can get promoted 74 ranks and given a battleship.

Other than that...

Sulu's Katana is the new lightsaber.
Green Chicks Rock.
Spock is something of a horndog.
